AAA projects decline in Thanksgiving travel
AAA forecasts a small decline in the number of Americans traveling during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Approximately 41 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home, a decrease of 600,000 travelers (1.4 percent) from last year’s total of 41.6 million. This is the first decline in Thanksgiving holiday travel since 2002 and is the fourth consecutive travel holiday this year with a year-to-year decline in the number of travelers.

Coyote caught on camera
Katie Trent is used to seeing animals in the woods behind her house on Kiowa Circle, to the west of Lotus Lake. The visitors to her yard have including deer, turkeys and owls, but during the afternoon of Oct. 31 she made her first coyote sighting.
She wasn’t quite sure what she was seeing.
“When I saw it, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s a big fox,” she recalled.
On second glance, she thought it could be a wolf because the animal was so filled out and seemed so big.
UPDATE: Reporter's husband charged with second-degree murder
The husband of Shakopee Valley News reporter Ruth Anne Maddox was charged this morning with second-degree murder with intent but without premeditation in her death.
Charles “Tony” Maddox, 43, made his initial court appearance in Scott County District Court in Shakopee. He faces a maximum of 40 years in prison. The case could go before a grand jury and the charges elevated to first-degree murder.

The city council denied a variance request Monday night that could have set a new precedent in the city.
The request was made by a Lotus Lake couple could, who wanted a 15-foot shoreland setback variance, so they could convert an existing deck on their home to a screened porch. In addition, they wanted to construct a 6 X 8-foot deck for their grilling needs.
